Als 11-jarige is Minogue voor het eerst te zien in de tv-serie The Sullivans, wat in 1986 resulteerde in een rol in de Australische hit-serie Neighbours. Als Charlene Mitchell weet ze bijna 24 miljoen kijkers aan de buis te kluisteren door te trouwen met Scott Robinson (gespeeld door Jason Donovan). Ze klimt voor een goed doel op het podium en zingt het nummer The Loco-Motion. Dat leverde Minogue een platencontract op en een nummer 1-hit in Australië.
De hitmakers Stock, Aitken & Waterman nodigen haar uit en schrijven binnen drie kwartier het nummer I Should Be So Lucky. Daarmee breekt de zangeres in 1988 wereldwijd door, met in Nederland een 14e plaats als resultaat voor haar Top 40-debuut. Later dat jaar verschijnt haar debuutalbum Kylie en met Especially For You, dat ze samen met Jason Donovan opneemt, staat ze in 1989 op nummer 6.
De zangeres krijgt een relatie met Michael Hutchence en haar lieve karakter ondergaat een verandering. De zangeres besluit ook met andere producers te gaan samenwerken, onder wie ook Stephen Bray (die eerder werkte voor Madonna). Pas in het najaar van 1994 verschijnt haar eerste single zonder Stock, Aitken & Waterman, Confide In Me. Een doorslaand succes was dat niet, want na 2 weken en een 38e plaats was de single weer verdwenen.
In 2001 besluit ze weer tot het maken van meer toegankelijke popliedjes, wat direct resulteert in haar eerste nummer 1-hit Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, dat de Top 40 voor zes weken aan weet te voeren. In 2004 is I Believe In You haar 19e Top 40-hit. De single wordt haar zesde en voorlopig laatste notering in de top 10.
Na de release van haar tweede verzamelalbum, Ultimate Kylie, doet de zangeres een wereldtournee. Die wordt echter in het voorjaar van 2005 afgebroken als borstkanker wordt geconstateerd. Anderhalf jaar later pakt Minogue, inmiddels succesvol behandeld,de draad weer op. Wow is in 2008 haar laatste hit in de Top 40. De zangeres brengt in 2010 wel een nieuw album (Aphrodite) uit, maar de singles daarvan blijven steken in de Tipparade. De singles van het album Kiss Me Once (2014) komen niet in de Tipparade terecht.
In 2015 werkt ze samen met Giorgio Moroder aan de track Right Here, Right Now dat op het album 74 Is The New 24 van de disco-legende terecht komt.
