Als tiener wilde Kiesa Rae Ellestad ballerina worden maar vanwege een blessure aan haar knie moest ze die droom laten voor wat het was. Na een korte loopbaan als zeilinstructrice valt tijdens haar werk in het Canadese leger op dat ze prima zangkwaliteiten heeft. In haar diensttijd leert ze gitaar spelen. De scheiding van haar ouders is de aanleiding om muziek te gaan schrijven. Ook volgde ze een studie aan de befaamde Berklee College Of Music.
In 2012 brengt ze haar eerste single uit, Oops waarna ze ook nummers schrijft voor artiesten als Rihanna en Icona Pop. In 2014 staat ze 19 weken in de Top 40 met Hideaway, dat drie weken op nummer 4 staat. Hidaway werd in het Verenigd Koninkrijk een nummer 1-hit. De opvolger, Giant In My Heart, deed het in de Britse hitlijst ook goed met een vierde plaats maar weet bij ons niet verder te komen dan de Tipparade.
Na een pauze keert Kiesza in 2017 terug met de single Dearly Beloved, waarna ze We Are Strong (met Pitbull) en Don’t Want You Back (met Bakermat) aflevert.
