Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson is voor het eerst te zien in de video van de Gym Class Heroes, Cupid’s Chokehold. Al snel bleek ze meer noten op haar zang te hebben. Als in 2007 het mini-album Ur So Gay verschijnt, krijgt ze de publieke steun van Madonna.

I Kissed A Girl wordt haar wereldwijde doorbraak en de single bereikt in meer dan twintig landen de eerste plaats. In Nederland staat de Alarmschijf twee weken op nummer 1, wat ook gebeurt met de opvolger Hot N Cold. Beide singles staan op het debuutalbum One Of The Boys.

In 2010 komt haar tweede album uit: Teenage Dream, waarvan California Gurls (samen met Snoop Dogg) haar een top 2-notering oplevert. Van het album komt in 2012 een nieuwe versie uit: Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, waar enkele nieuwe nummers aan zijn toegevoegd. Ondertussen is het huwelijk van de zangeres op de klippen gelopen en krijgt ze een relatie met zanger John Mayer.

Prism is haar derde volledige album dat in 2013 verschijnt en levert opnieuw verscheidene hitsingles op. Zo komt de eerste single van dat album, Roar, op nummer 2.

Dark Horse (samen met Juicy J) wordt in 2014 haar derde nummer 1-hit in de Top 40 en uiteindelijk haar grootste succes in ons land. Na Birthday verschijnen de singles Legendary Lovers en This Is How We Do in de Top 40.

In juli 2016 verschijnt er, voor het eerst sinds het uitbrengen van Prism, een nieuwe track van Katy Perry. Het nummer Rise wordt uitgebracht ter ere van de Olympische Spelen in Rio. In februari 2017 verschijnt Chained To The Rhythm, waarop ook de kleinzoon van Bob Marley, Skip, te horen is. Met het nummer scoort Perry haar 16e Alarmschijf.

Waar ze kort voor de release van Chained To The Rhythm nog overal discoballen verstopte, besloot Katy Perry voor haar volgende single, Bon Appétit die in april 2017 verschijnt, zelf kersentaartjes uit te delen op Times Square in New York. In de aanloop naar haar vijfde studioalbum dat in juni verschijnt (Witness) brengt ze Swish Swish uit. Diezelfde maand is ze ook te horen op Feels, een samenwerking met Calvin Harris, Big Sean en Pharrell Williams.

Na een relatief rustige periode op hitparadevlak is ze in februari 2019 terug met 365, een samenwerking met de Duitse dj en producer Zedd. Later verschijnen ook Never Really Over en Harleys In Hawaii als singles. In maart 2020 verschijnt er met Never Worn White ook weer een ballad van de zangeres. Vooruitlopend op de release van haar vijfde Katy Perry-album, dat op 14 augustus verschijnt, worden Daisies en Smile uitgebracht als singles.
