Kanye West (voluit Kanye Omari West) is een Amerikaanse rapper/zanger/producer. Hij heeft ook een eigen platenlabel (GOOD Music).
Hij is bekend geworden door het produceren, onder andere van het album 'The Blueprint' van Jay-Z, en diverse hitsingles van o.a. Alicia keys, Janet jackson en Ludacris.
In 2003 maakte hij zijn eerste singles, in 2004 verscheen zijn eerste album 'The College Dropout'. Sindsdien heeft hij nog 3 albums uitgebracht: 'Late registration' (2005), 'Graduation' (2007) en '808s & Heartbreak' (2008).
In april 2008 verschijnt American Boy in de Top 40, wat zijn grootste hit in ons land wordt. Op zijn lijst van Top 40-hits prijken, naast deze samenwerking met Estelle ook producties samen met Chris Martin, Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo, Katy Perry en Jay-Z.
In 2015 verschijnen twee samenwerkingen tussen West en Paul McCartney. Eerst Only One en vrij snel daarna ook FourFiveSeconds, een akoestische track waarop ook Rihanna te horen is. Die laatste wordt, na een afwezigheid van ruim twee-en-een-half jaar in de Top 40, zijn 11e hit. Het nummer komt op de tweede plaats en is daarmee de hoogst bereikte positie van West. In 2016 brengt Kanye West het album The Life Of Pablo uit, waarvan Famous de eerste single wordt.
Kanye krijgt te kampen met geestelijke gezondheidsproblemen. Zo breekt hij zijn tournee abrupt af. In 2018 dropt hij twee albums (Ye en Kids See Ghosts). In september schieten de aantallen op YouTube omhoog als hij de track I Love It uitbrengt, een samenwerking met Lil Pump.
In oktober 2019 verschijnt het album Jesus Is King, een muzikale geloofsbelijdenis van Kanye West die in 27 minuten zijn gevoelens in een gospel laat terugkomen. De track Follow God is een van de meest beluisterde tracks van het album.
In 2020 laat Kanye doorschemeren nog in dat zelfde jaar verkiesbaar te zijn als Amerikaanse president. In de zomer is hij te horen op Ego Death, een samenwerking met Ty Dolla $ign, FKA Twigs en Skrillex. Op 29 augustus 2021 brengt Kanye zijn tiende studioalbum genaamd Donda uit. Het album is vernoemd naar zijn overleden moeder. De eerste single van het album is Jail.
