John Russell, geboren in het Surinaamse Paramaribo, was een soulzanger. Vanwege zijn omvang wordt hij al snel Big John en King Size Russell genoemd. In 1957, op zijn 14e, verhuist Russell naar Nederland. Twee jaar later wint hij een talentenjacht, wat uiteindelijk leidt tot internationale optredens met onder anderen The Blue Diamonds.
In 1973 en 1976 heeft hij als John Russell eerst twee noteringen in de Tipparade. Verderop in 1976 heeft hij zijn eerste hit met I Never Loved A Woman The Way That I Love You. Daarna staat hij in 1981 nog eenmaal in de Top 40 met Hokie Pokie (All Over The World).
Russell overlijdt in 2010 in Leusden aan een hartstilstand, 67 jaar oud.
