In 2001 verschijnt Live At Jimmy’s Uptown, een album waarop John Legend enkele optredens heeft samengevat. Als hij met Kanye West samenwerkt aan Get Lifted komt het succes van Legend in een stroomversnelling. Ordinary People is zijn eerste hit in de Top 40.

In 2006 wordt de productie van het tweede album, Once Again, opnieuw samen gedaan met Kanye West, die nu ook hulp krijgt van Will.I.Am. Het levert met Save Room, P.D.A. (We Just Don’t Care) en Stereo drie Top 40-hits.

In het najaar van 2013 verschijnt het album Love In The Future, waarvan zowel Made To Love als All Of Me als hoogste nieuwe in de lijst komen. All Of Me is de achtste hit van John Legend en wordt eind januari 2014 zijn eerste nummer 1-notering. De single bereikt in 2014 de zesde plaats van de grootste Top 40-hits ooit.

In februari 2015 krijgt de zanger een Oscar voor de track Glory als beste song. Het nummer is afkomstig uit de film Selma.

Een maand later zingt hij Lay Me Down, de track van Sam Smith, opnieuw in samen met de Britse zanger. Het gelegenheidsduo doet dat voor Red Nose Day, het initiatief om geld in te zamelen voor Comic Relief, dat minder bedeelden helpt een beter leven te krijgen.

Na ruim anderhalf jaar afwezigheid staat hij met Like I'm Gonna Lose You (met Meghan Trainor) in januari 2016 weer in de Top 40. In juni scoort hij zijn eerste Dance Smash als hij voor Summer Nights samenwerkt met Tiësto. In oktober verschijnt, als voorloper van zijn vijfde studioalbum Darkness And Light, de single Love Me Now. In februari van 2019 brengt de zanger de track Preach uit waarmee hij zijn onvrede laat horen rond politiegeweld, het asielbeleid en schietpartijen op school.

John Legend is in november 2020 te horen op Minefields, een track met de Marokkaans-Canadese zangeres Faouzia.
