Geboren in Puerto Rico groeit Jennifer Lopez op in New York. Ze stopt met haar studie en gaat aan het werk als danseres. In 1993 vraagt Janet Jackson haar mee te zingen op That’s The Way Love Goes. Daarna verkoos ze een loopbaan als actrice boven die van zangeres. Ze speelde in verschillende films en werkte samen met Jack Nickolson, George Clooney en The Wedding Planner.

In 1999 verschijnt haar eerste album, On The 6. Haar eerste hit, If You Had My Love, wordt direct een nummer 1-hit in de Top 40. Ook de eerste single die van haar tweede album (J Lo) verschijnt, Love Don’t Cost A Thing, komt bovenaan de lijst. De zangeres neemt na haar derde album een korte pauze en komt in 2005 met het album Rebirth, wat mede geproduceerd wordt door Timbaland. Get Right bereikt de tweede plaats, maar de daaropvolgende singles boeken nauwelijks succes. Pas in 2011 scoort ze met On The Floor (samen met Pitbull) weer een top 10-hit.

De zangeres heeft inmiddels 19 hits op haar naam geschreven en deed dat in 2011 met I’m Into You (samen met Lil’ Wayne) voor het laatst. In 2014 werkt ze opnieuw samen met Pitbull. We Are One (Ole Ola), waarop ook de Braziliaanse Claudia Leitte te horen is, is de officiële track voor het Wereldkampioenschap voetbal 2014. In 2015 werkt ze mee aan Try Me, een track van Everything Is 4, het album van Jason Derulo.

Ain't Your Mama is in het voorjaar van 2016 haar nieuwste single. De track is geschreven door Meghan Trainor en geproduceerd door Dr. Luke.
