Janet Jackson begint net als broer Michael al op jonge leeftijd met zingen en in 1979 is ze te horen op Michaels soloalbum Off The Wall en 3 jaar later ook op Thriller. Solo breekt ze op 20-jarige leeftijd door met het album Control. Veel hits komen van dat album, waaronder Nasty, Let's Wait Awhile, Control, When I Think Of You en What Have You Done For Me Lately. Die laatste bereikt de eerste plaats in de Nederlandse Top 40. In 1989 verschijnt Rhythm Nation 1814. Ook dat album levert weer veel hits op, waaronder het titelnummer, Escapade, Love Will Never Do Without You en Black Cat. In 1993 verschijnt het album Janet en scoort ze een enorme hit met That's The Way Love Goes, dat in de Top 40 tot nummer 5 reikt. Daarna is het een poos stil en verschijnt er in 1995 alleen een verzamelaar. In 1997 komt ze sterk terug met The Velvet Rope. Veel hits en één daarvan, Together Again, wordt Janets eerste nummer 1-hit. In 2004 is ze in opspraak als een van haar tepels te zien is nadat zanger Justin Timberlake een topje afrukt, niet wetend dat daar niks onder zit. Het schandaal krijgt al snel de naam "Nipplegate".

Inmiddels is ze moeder, de 50 gepasseerd en maakt ze nog steeds platen. In augustus maakt ze met reggaeton-koning Daddy Yankee de single Made For Now.
