James Morrison heeft een jeugd met ziekte en armoede gekend. Na zijn geboorte gaven artsen hem slechts een 30% overlevingskans en zelfs dan zou hij ernstige hersenschade houden. Zijn ouders gingen uit elkaar en in zijn jonge jaren had hij maar weinig overtuiging. Pas toen hij verhuisde naar Cornwall groeide zijn zelfvertrouwen en ging hij met muziek aan de slag. Op woensdag- en zondagavonden stapte hij vaak op het podium als daar de gelegenheid voor was.

You Give Me Something werd in 2006 zijn doorbraak en met die track stond Morrison twee weken op nummer 2 in de Top 40. Al vrij snel volgde een compleet album met Undiscovered. Een jaar later won hij een Brit Award als beste Britse zanger.

In 2008 verschijnt zijn tweede album, Songs For You, Truths For Me. Van dat album werd de Alarmschijf Broken Strings, dat hij samen met Nelly Furtado maakte, zelfs zijn grootste hit in ons land. In 2010 is ook zijn derde album The Awakening een feit. Slave To The Music is in 2011 zijn tiende Top 40-hit.

In oktober van 2015 verschijnt zijn vierde album, Higher Than Here, waarop de singles Demons en Stay Like This staan.
