In de zomer van 2013 brengt James Bay zijn eerste mini-album, The Dark Of The Morning uit. Een slordig jaar later is Let It Go de opvolger,waarvan het titelnummer de Britse hitlijst weet te halen. Ondertussen had de zanger al een tour achter de rug samen met Hozier.

Eind 2014 verschijnt Hold Back The River, afkomstig van zijn debuutalbum Chaos And The Calm dat in maart 2015 verschijnt.

Het wordt de eerste Top 40-hit voor Bay, die ook nog eens wordt onderscheiden met de Brit Awards Critic Choice. Ook Let It Go, dat Alarmschijf wordt, is afkomstig van Chaos And The Calm en staat eind mei in de Top 40. Later volgen de singles If You Ever Want To Be In Love en Best Fake Smile.

In 2018 maakt James Bay bekend een ander geluid te willen laten horen. Dat doet hij via het album Electric Light dat Wild Love en Us tot de Tipparade brengt. Begin 2019 maakt hij, samen met Julia Michaels, de track Peer Pressure.
