Prog rock band, opgericht in 1967 door Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks en Peter Gabriel.

De band is in eerste instantie populair in hun thuisland Engeland. In 1970 voegt zanger/drummer Phil Collins zich bij de band en beginnen ze grote hits te scoren. Peter Gabriel heeft er in 1975 genoeg van en verlaat de band.

Na vele audities voor een nieuwe zanger besluit Collins om de zang en drums te verzorgen en gaat Genesis door als een 3-mans band nadat ook gitarist Steve Hackett op stapt. In 1978 scoort de band voor het eerst in Nederland met de single Follow You Follow Me. Ook Turn It On Again en Abacab halen de lijst. Collins neemt vanaf 1981 ook solo albums op maar blijft bij Genesis. In 1983 behalen ze de top 10 met de single Mama. Ook Land Of Confusion van het album Invisible Touch wordt een top 10 hit. In 1991 verschijnt het laatste album met Collins, We Can't Dance. Het album levert 5 hits op. No Son Of Mine, Jesus He Knows, Tell Me Why, Hold On My Heart en de grootste is I Can't Dance dat in 1992 op nummer 1 van de Top 40 belandt. In 1996 maakt Collins bekend dat hij uit de band stapt. Rutherford en Banks gaan door met een nieuwe zanger Ray Wilson en brengen het album Calling All Stations uit maar het succes is over. In 2007 komen Collins, Rutherford en Banks nog eenmaal bij elkaar voor een reunie toernee.
