In 1984 werd deze band opgericht door ex-leden van The Beat David Steele, Andy Cox. Zanger Roland Gift maakte de band compleet. De bandnaam is afgeleid van de film All The Fine Cannibals.


De band heeft succesvolle singles uitgebracht zoals Johnny Come Home en She Drives Me Crazy.


Tussendoor was Gift druk met acteerklussen en formeerden Cox en Steele het dance-project Two Men, A Drum Machine And A Trumpet. Dit succes werd door andere artiesten opgemerkt en daardoor ontstonden de samenwerkingen met onder andere Wee Papa Girl Rappers en Pop Will Eat Itself.


De groep was een tijd niet actief omdat Gift zijn voorkeur gaf aan zijn acteercarrière en hiervoor zelfs naar Nieuw-Zeeland verhuisde.


Na hun terugkeer in 1996 brachten de Fine Young Cannibals de hitverzamelaar The Finest uit. Maar ze konden het eerdere succes niet meer evenaren.


De groepsnaam werd overgenomen door Roland Gift en hij bracht nog twee solo-albums uit. In 2014 gaf Gift een aantal concerten onder eigen naam.
