Marschall Bruce Mathers III werd in zijn jeugd geïnspireerd door LL Cool J en de Beasty Boys. Soul Intent verschijnt als eerste, zeer beperkt verkrijgbare, release. In 1996 is Infinite zijn eerste album, maar echt succes volgt pas als hij de steun van Dr. Dre krijgt.

Het album The Slim Shady LP wordt dan ook zijn echte doorbraak. In de Top 40 bereiken Hi! My Name Is Slim Shady en Guilty Conscience (samen met Dr. Dre) de Top 40. In 2000 verschijnt het album The Marshall Mathers LP, waarvan Stan de tweede plaats in de Top 40 bereikt. De rapper scoort later met Without Me en Lose Yourself twee nummer 1-hits.

Na Love The Way You Lie (#4), dat hij in 2010 samen met Rihanna tot een hit maakt, wordt het stil rond Eminem.

In 2013 verschijnt The Marshall Mathers LP2, het achtste studioalbum van Eminem. Ook is hij opnieuw te horen in een samenwerking met Rihanna. The Monster is zijn 21e hit in de Top 40 en wordt een dusdanig succes dat hij elf jaar na dato zijn beste resultaat (Lose Yourself uit 2003) overtreft. Op het album staat onder meer Headlights (met Nate Ruess) en Guts Over Fear (met Sia).

In 2017 maakt hij met P!nk voor haar album Beautiful Trauma de track Revenge. Nog geen maand later komt de rapper ook zelf met een nummer, Walk On Water, waar hij Beyoncé voor wist te strikken om de vocalen voor haar rekening te nemen. Op 15 december verschijnt met Revival zijn negende album. River, een samenwerking met Ed Sheeran, wordt Alarmschijf.

Ook op zijn volgende album, Music To Be Murdered By, werkt hij samen met Ed Sheeran. Eminem dropt het album in januari 2020 als grote verrassing met daarop ook een samenwerking met de overleden rapper Juice Wrld, Godzilla. De eerste single van het album wordt Darkness. Aan het einde van het jaar krijgt het album een vervolg met Music to Be Murdered By – Side B waarvan Gnat de populairste track wordt.
