Op 25 augustus 1954 werd in Londen Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus geboren, beter bekend als Elvis Costello.

Zijn debuutalbum My Aim Is True kwam in 1977 uit. Het album werd opgenomen met de Amerikaanse band Clover. Daarna kreeg hij zijn vaste begeleidingsband The Attractions. Eind jaren 70 wisselde zijn muziekstijl van punkrock naar new wave. Met de single Oliver’s Army kwam hij in 1979 voor het eerst in aanraking met de Nederlandse Top 40.

Hij heeft door alle jaren heen met veel mensen samengewerkt. Zo ging hij o.a. in de jaren 80 een songschrijversverband aan met Paul McCartney. De meeste nummers kwamen eind jaren 80 uit op de albums Spike en Flowers In The Dirt. Begin jaren 90 verschijnen de overige nummers van die samenwerking op het album Mighty Like A Rose.

In 1999 nam hij de single She op, wat oorspronkelijk een nummer is van Charles Aznavour is. Het nummer werd als titelsong gebruikt voor de succesvolle film Nothing Hill. Het nummer scoorde hoog in vele hitlijsten, maar in Nederland komt dit nummer verrassend genoeg niet verder dan de tipparade.

Zijn 53e album Wise Up Ghost and Other Songs verscheen in 2013.
