Candle in the Wind 1997 is een herschreven en opnieuw opgenomen versie van Elton Johns eigen hit Candle in the Wind uit 1973, die op single werd uitgebracht als een eerbetoon aan wijlen Diana, prinses van Wales. Op 31 augustus 1997 overleed Diana, prinses van Wales, aan de gevolgen van een auto-ongeluk in Parijs. Het nieuws schokte Elton John, omdat hij en Diana goede vrienden waren. In 1997 overleed een andere goede vriend van Elton en Diana: modeontwerper Gianni Versace, wiens begrafenis hij met Diana had bijgewoond. Elton raakte na het nieuws van het overlijden van Diana in een diepe depressie en vertaalde zijn verdriet in een eerbetoon aan Diana. Hij nam contact op met zijn songwritingpartner Bernie Taupin om de tekst van 1973 te herschrijven.
