André Romelle Young wordt geboren in Compton. Zijn naam werd al op jonge leeftijd afgekort tot Dre en vanwege zijn interesse in basketbalspeler Dr. J kwam zijn artiestennaam tot stand.

In 1984 is Dre één van de leden van de World Class Wreckin’ Cru, maar daar doet hij voornamelijk productie. Nog geen jaar later vormt hij met Ice Cube en Eazy-E de groep N.W.A. En die werden succesvol in het ganstarap-genre. Na het eerste album, N.W.A. And The Posse, volgde het album Straight Outta Compton. Daarmee, maar vooral door het nummer Fuck Tha Police, wist de groep direct naam te vestigen. In 1991 start hij enkele platenlabels, waaronder Death Row Records, waar ook Snoop Dogg zijn handtekening zet. Nog geen jaar later maakt hij zijn eerste single, samen met Snoop Dogg, Deep Cover. Zijn eerste solo-album The Chronic (1992) wordt direct een hiphop-klassieker.

In de tweede helft van de jaren negentig start hij Aftermath Entertainment, een label dat het in de beginjaren niet makkelijk had. Inmiddels had hij met Keep Their Heads Ringing en California Love (met 2Pac) twee hits in de Top 40 op zijn naam geschreven. Eind 1997 komt daar No Diggity (met Blackstreet) bij dat tot op heden zijn grootste succes is in ons land.

Het album The Wash verschijnt in 2001 en is het album dat een lange periode van stilte zou inluiden op het vlak van album-releases. Pas in 2015 zou er een nieuw album van Dr. Dre verschijnen. In 2002 staat Dr. Dre voor de zevende en laatste keer in de Top 40, samen met Knoc-Turn’al op Bad Intentions. Daarna verschijnen er nog een aantal samenwerkingen, maar deze blijven steken in de Tipparade.

Steeds doken er geruchten op over een nieuw album, maar steeds bleven die uit. Tot 2015. Dan werkt hij mee aan een film over N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton. Hij levert in dat kader een compleet album af, waarvan Talking To My Diary de track is die het meest onder de aandacht komt.
