DNCE bestaat uit Jack Lawless, Cole Whittle, JinJoo Lee en Joe Jonas. Die laatste bracht tussen 2006 en 2009 al vier studioalbums uit met Jonas Brothers. Die groep stopte in 2013 terwijl er een vijfde album klaar lag. Inmiddels had Jonas met Fastlife (2011) al een solo-album afgeleverd.


Jonas kende Jack Lawless uit de tournee van 2007 waar hij als drummer werkte. De samenwerking resulteerde in een vriendschap en het idee om later samen nog eens wat te gaan doen. Dat gebeurde in 2015 met DNCE, origineel de titel van een nummer dat ze schreven voor een album, maar uiteindelijk de bandnaam werd. Op 18 september 2015 verschijnt hun eerste single, Cake By The Ocean dat in de Verenigde Staten de top 10 weet te bereiken. In maart van 2016 wordt dat de Alarmschijf bij Radio 538. Ook reist DNCE dan mee tijdens de 42 Amerikaanse shows van Selena Gomez. Later wordt Toothbrush uitgekozen als de volgende single. In november verschijnt hun titelloze debuutalbum. Al snel na die release blijkt dat DNCE al weer aan een nieuw project is begonnen als in april van 2017 de track Kissing Strangers, een samenwerking met Nicki Minaj, verschijnt.
Het is een tijdje stil rondom DNCE maar in februari 2022 laten ze weer van zich horen als ze de samenwerking met Kygo zijn aangegaan. Ze droppen samen de single Dancing Feet.
