Op 21 juni 1978 ging op West End de musical Evita van Andrew Lloyd Webber en Tim Rice in première. Net als bij hun musical Jesus Christ Superstar werd de musical voorafgegaan door een conceptalbum, dat twee jaar daarvoor al was uitgebracht. Dit album had al de nummer 1-hit Don't Cry For Me, Argentina van Julie Covington opgeleverd. Evita gaat over het leven van de Argentijnse presidentsvrouw Eva Perón (1919-1952).
In de musical speelde David Essex de rol van Che. In het verhaal doet Che dienst als verteller en - vergelijkbaar met het koor in Griekse drama's - de verpersoonlijking van het Argentijnse volk. Op het conceptalbum werd deze rol nog gezongen door C.T. Wilkinson. Net als Julie Covington werkte hij uiteindelijk niet mee aan de musical. De rol van Evita werd in 1978 gespeeld door Elaine Paige.
Anderhalf jaar na Don't Cry For Me, Argentina was Oh What A Circus de enige Top 40-hit uit de West End-musicalversie van Evita. Oh What A Circus heeft dezelfde melodie als Don't Cry For Me, Argentina, maar het tempo ligt hoger en de tekst is totaal verschillend.
De musical begint met aankondiging van de dood van Eva Perón, gevolgd door haar begrafenis. Hierna zingt Che het lied Oh What A Circus. Het lied begint in het Latijn met de Maria-antifoon Salve Regina. "Filii Evae" (kinderen van Eva) slaat in de oorspronkelijke tekst op de Bijbelse Eva, maar in de context van Evita wordt natuurlijk verwezen naar Eva Perón.
Het eerste couplet is een cynische reactie op de hysterische rouw waarin Argentinië na de dood van Eva Perón gedompeld was en in de het tweede couplet relativeert Che de betekenis van de populaire leider. (As soon as the smoke from the funeral clears, we're all gonna see and how she did nothing for years.)
