Jack en Like Patterson, Grace Chatto en Milan Neil Amin-Smith leren elkaar kennen op de universiteit van Cambridge. Het drietal schrijft dan al het nummer Mozart’s House. In thuisland Groot Brittannië debuteert de band Clean Bandit met de single A+E. In het voorjaar van 2013 brengen ze Mozart’s House tot de top 20 van de Britse hitlijst.

In januari van 2014 verschijnt hun vierde single, Rather Be, waarop ook Jess Glynne te horen is. Het nummer komt binnen op de eerste plaats van de Britse hitlijst en staat daar vier weken genoteerd. De single wordt door 538 uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf en bereikt ook in de Media Markt Top 40 de eerste plek. Het nummer groeit uit tot de grootste Top 40-hit van 2014. Later dat jaar verschijnt hun debuutalbum, waarvan Extraordinary (met Sharna Bass) ook Alarmschijf wordt. Real Love, opnieuw met Jess Glynne, en Stronger blijven daarna steken in de Tipparade.

Het tweede album van Clean Bandit moet in 2016 verschijnen. Tears verschijnt in mei als voorloper van dat album, waarop X Factor-winnares Louisa Johnson de vocalen voor haar rekening neemt. In oktober van dat jaar maakt Neil bekend de groep te gaan verlaten. Rockabye, met daarop ook Sean Paul en Anne-Marie, werd door Radio 538 uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf. In december wordt het hun tweede nummer 1-hit in de Top 40.

In 2017 weten ze Zara Larrson te strikken voor hun nieuwe single, Symphony, die op 17 maart verschijnt en door Radio 538 wordt uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf. Die track wordt hun derde top 3-hit in ons land en wordt in oktober opgevolgd door een samenwerking met Julia Michaels, I Miss You.

Halverwege mei 2018 levert de groep met de vocalen van Demi Lovato via Solo weer een nieuwe track af. Die track bereikt uiteindelijk de vierde plaats. Eind november verschijnt What Is Love?, het tweede album van de Britse groep. Baby, de track met Marina and the Diamonds en Luis Fonsi, verschijnt als voorloper van dat album.
