Op 8-jarige leeftijd doet Britney Spears auditie voor The Mickey Mouse Club. Op dat moment wordt ze afgewezen vanwege haar leeftijd. Ruim twee jaar later krijgt ze wel een plekje naast Christina Aguilera en Justin Timberlake. In 1997 raakt ze in gesprek om deel uit te gaan maken van de groep Innosennse. Uiteindelijk besluiten ze te gaan voor haar solocarrière en nog geen jaar later werkt ze met onder andere Max Martin en Denniz Pop aan haar debuutalbum.

Begin 1999 verschijnt haar eerste album, … Baby One More Time, waarvan de titelsong ook in ons land de eerste plaats bereikt. Ook de opvolger, Sometimes, wordt een nummer 1-hit i n de Top 40. (You Drive Me) Crazy en Born To Make You Happy komen als derde en vierde single ook in de top 5 terecht.

Oopp!... I Did It Again wordt haar derde nummer 1-hit en verschijnt als voorloper van haar gelijjknamige solo-album. Met dat album gaat ze voor het eerst op tournee buiten de Verenigde Staten, waar ze in Nederland het GelreDome aandoet. Sindsdien tekende ze een contract met Pepsi voor ruim 7 miljoen euro, kort voordat in 2001 het album Britney verschijnt.

In 2003 maakt ze een duet met Madonna via Me Against The Music. Voor Spears is dat inmiddels haar 14e Top 40-hit en de voorloper van haar vierde album In The Zone. In januari 2004 is ze voor 55 uur getrouwd met Jason Alexander. Later dat jaar krijgt ze een relatie met Kevin Federline. Ook lanceert ze haar eerste geurtje.

In 2005 wordt haar eerste zoon, Sean Preston Federline, geboren. Een jaar later bevalt ze ook van Jayden James. Als kort daarna haar relatie met Kevin tot een einde komt gaat het met Britney bergafwaarts. Zo wordt ze opgenomen in verschillende klinieken, raakt ze de voogdij over haar kinderen kwijt en wordt ze onder verscherpt toezicht geplaatst.

In 2011 werkt Spears aan haar terugkeer met de single Hold It Against Me, op dat moment de voorloper van haar zevende album Femme Fatal. De single kwam op nummer 1 in de Verenigde Staten, waar het in ons land strandde op de 25e plaats. Pas eind 2012 komen we La Spears weer tegen op de eerste plaats in een samenwerking met Will.I.Am op Scream & Shout. Dat werd, met totaal zeven weken, de langstgenoteerde Spears-hit op nummer 1. Will.I.Am produceerde oook haar achtste studioalbum Britney Jean.

Britney krijgt in 2013 een permanente show in Las Vegas. Die reeks weet ze in 2015 voor nog eens twee jaar te verlengen. Ondertussen gaat ze werken aan haar negende studioalbum. Daarvan is Make Me, haar samenwerking met G-Eazy, de eerste single.
In 2022 wordt het verscherpt toezicht opgeheven en lijkt Britney haar leven weer zelf in handen te hebben. In augustus brengt ze het nummer Hold Me Closer uit, een samenwerking met Elton John.
