Vanuit de hardcore punk scene stapten begin jaren 80 Adam Yauch en Mike Diamond over naar de hiphop scene. Waar ze samen met Adam Horovitz de Beastie Boys startten.
Hun debuutalbum Licensed To III brachten ze in 1986 uit en werd een groot succes. De combinatie van rock en hiphop viel goed bij het publiek. Met hun single (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!) zetten zij zich goed neer in de muzikale wereld.
Bij de albums die daarop volgden wisten ze elke keer iets nieuws toe te voegen. Zoals uiteenlopende samples, waarmee ze voorlopers werden van abstracte hiphop of het gebruik van live-instrumenten.
De band kreeg van Capitol Records de mogelijkheid om zelf nieuw werk uit te brengen. En zo ontstond hun eigen platenlabel Grand Royal. Check Your Head uit 1992 was het eerste album dat zij hieronder uitbrachten.
De Beastie Boys hebben zich meerdere malen uitgesproken over sociale en politieke kwesties. Op het album To The 5 Boroughs is hun mening duidelijk te horen over de aanpak van de regering na de aanslagen op 11 september 2001.
Adam Youch liet op 20 juli 2009 via een videoboodschap op hun website weten dat de Beastie Boys hun geplande tournee moesten uitstellen wegens gezondheidsredenen. Op 4 mei 2012 overleed hij aan de gevolgen van kanker. Hij werd 47 jaar oud.
