Axel Hedfors scoort in 2004 zijn eerste succes met Feel The Vibe. De track, waarop ook Tara McDonald te horen is, bereikt de eerste plaats van de Britse dancelijst en staat in 2006 ook kortstondig in de Top 40.

In 2005 werkt hij samen met Sebastian Ingrosso als Together opnieuw een clubhit wordt. Via Ingrosso komt hij in contact met Steve Angello. Samen vormen ze de act Supermode, dat bij ons 20 weken in de Top 40 staat met Tell Me Why en de vijfde plaats weet te bereiken. Later vormt hij samen met Angello en Ingrosso het collectief Swedish House Mafia. De act scoort vijf hits in de Top 40, waaronder de nummer 1-hit One.

Dat Axwell tot veel in staat is bewijst zijn remix van Sweet Disposition (een single van Temper Trap), dat in 2011 zelfs een nominatie krijgt voor een Grammy Award. Twee jaar later staat zijn remix van In My Mind (Feenixpawl) namelijk opnieuw in de nominatielijst van de onderscheidingen. In My Mind is in 2012 de tiende notering in de Top 40 waar Axwell actief in bijdraagt.
In 2013 bereikt Axwell de 19e plaats in de jaarlijkse DJ Top 100.

In 2014 komt zijn samenwerking met de Nederlandse Sick Individuals en de Amerikaanse zangeres Taylr Renee, I Am, in de Tipparade. Aan het einde van het jaar komt de Swedish House Mafia weer een beetje terug als hij opnieuw samenwerkt met Sebastian Ingrosso. Het duo werkt aan een compleet album waarvan Something New, On My Way en Sun Is Shining als single verschijnen.
