De opname werd op 8 juni 1968 gemaakt tijdens de uitvaart van de Amerikaanse senator en presidentskandidaat Robert Kennedy in de Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York. Kennedy was drie dagen daarvoor in Los Angeles doodgeschoten. Het lied van Andy Williams en de toespraak van Roberts broer Ted Kennedy (waaruit een gedeelte staat afgedrukt op de achterkant van de single) maakten veel emoties los onder de aanwezigen en de televisiekijkers die het gebeuren rechtstreeks konden volgen. De tekst en melodie waren in 1968 al meer dan honderd jaar oud.
Eén week voor de binnenkomst van Battle Hymn Of The Republic bereikte een ander nummer op dezelfde melodie de Top 40: Vader Is De Dader van Egbert Douwe haalde uiteindelijk de 23e plaats. Later bereikten nog twee nummers met deze melodie de Top 40: Gloryland van Daryl Hall & Sounds Of Blackness (#32 in 1994) en Lief Klein Konijntje van Henkie (#26 in 2006). Ook deze nummers hadden een andere tekst.
