Alessia Caracciolo leerde op tienjarige leeftijd gitaar spelen en nog geen drie jaar later begon ze haar eigen YouTube-kanaal waar ze filmpjes plaatste van nummers die ze speelde.



Op haar 18e tekent ze een contract bij Def Jam, waar in het voorjaar van 2015 haar debuutsingle Here verschijnt. De track bereikt de achtste plaats in de Billboard Hot 100. Het nummer is een van de vijf tracks op de ep Four Pink Walls dat op 26 augustus verschijnt. Op 13 november 2015 levert ze met Know-It-All haar eerste volwaardige album af, waarvan ook Wild Things afkomstig is.

In december van 2016 wordt Scars To Your Beautiful haar tweede Top 40-hit die uitgroeit tot haar grootste succes in de lijst. Ook maakt ze voor de Disney-animatiefilm Vaiana het nummer How Far I'll Go en levert ze met Stay een bijdrage aan een track van Zedd. In de zomer van 2017 levert ze een vocale bijdrage aan 1-800-273-8255 van Logic.

In 2019 is Alessia Cara te horen op Let Me Down Slowly, een duet met Alec Benjamin en later ook op Another Place, de track van Bastille.
