Alannah Myles wordt op Eerste Kerstdag 1958 geboren in Toronto (Canada). Al op jonge leeftijd schrijft ze haar eerste liedjes en begint ze op te treden als zangeres. Als ze singer-songwriter Christopher Ward tegenkomt helpt hij haar met het vormen van een eigen band, waarmee ze covers opneemt van onder anderen Aretha Franklin, AC/DC en The Pretenders.
Haar grote doorbraak beleeft Myles in 1990 met Black Velvet, dat haar een Grammy en wereldwijd veel hitnoteringen oplevert. In Nederland komt de single tot nummer 3 in de Top 40. De opvolger Love Is komt een paar maanden later de lijst binnen maar komt niet verder dan 32. In 1993 geldt hetzelfde voor haar single Song Instead Of A Kiss.
