Aliaume Damala Badara Thiam brengt in 2004 zijn debuutalbum Trouble uit. De eerste single Locked Up doet maar weinig, maar met Lonely scoort Akon daarna een hit van jewelste. Het nummer, gebaseerd op samples van Mr. Lonely van Bobby Vinton, staat vijf weken op de eerste plaats van de Top 40 en komt ook in Australië, Oostenrijk, Tsjechië, Denemarken, Duitsland, Ierland, het Verenigd Koninkrijk bovenaan. Op Ghetto, dat zijn tweede Top 40-hit wordt, werkt hij samen met Ali B en Yes-R. De single komt in het voorjaar van 2006 op nummer 3.
In 2006 begint hij zijn eigen platenlabel, Kon Live Distribution, waar zijn tweede album Konvicted verschijnt. Op dat album staat ook Smack That, zijn samenwerking met Eminem. In 2007 werkt hij mee aan The Sweet Escape van Gwen Stefani.
Zijn samenwerking met David Guetta in 2009 wordt zijn derde top 3-hit in ons land. Sexy Bitch staat totaal 21 weken in de Top 40 en wordt zijn grootste succes in ons land. In 2011 is zijn bijdrage op Boomerang (met DJ Felli Fel, Pitbull en Jermaine Dupri zijn elfde en voorlopig laatste Top 40-notering.
In 2015 maakt hij bekend te werken aan zijn vierde album, Stadium. Dat album verscheen niet, maar wel is Akon in 2016 te horen in een samenwerking met Robin Schulz op Heatwave. In de zomer van 2017 horen we de Amerikaan op een samenwerking met Sam Feldt, Yes.
In 2019 kondigde Akon zijn eigen platenlabel Akonik Label Group aan en dat hij vier studioalbums zal uitbrengen in verschillende genres. Zijn eerste album die hij uitbracht onder zijn platenlabel was El Negreeto met veel Spaanse invloeden. In hetzelfde jaar verscheen het album Akonda dat meer Afrobeats-muziek bevat.
Eind mei 2021 werkt hij samen met de DJ's Master KG en David Guetta en droppen ze de track Shine Your Light.
