In 1998 start Jared Leto, samen met zijn broer Shannon, de groep Thirty Seconds To Mars. In de jaren daarna kent de groep verschillende samenstellingen. In 2002 verschijnt het titelloze debuutalbum, dat drie jaar later wordt opgevolgd door A Beautiful Life. From Yesterday krijgt als single van dat album een notering in de Tipparade.
In 2009 is Kings And Queens Alarmschijf bij 538. Het nummer komt van het derde studioalbum, This Is War, en wordt de eerste hit in de Top 40. De single staat acht weken in de lijst en bereikt de 21e plaats. This Is War en Closer To The Edge staan beide in de Tipparade, waarna Jared Leto bekend maakt een rustperiode te willen voor de band.
In het voorjaar van 2013 verschijnt er een nieuw album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams en een complete wereldtournee. Later dat jaar krijgt de band een MTV European Music Award als beste alternatieve act. Op het album staat ook Do Or Die, een nummer dat later door de Nederlandse Afrojack onder handen werd genomen. De track zal ook terug te vinden zijn op het debuutalbum van Afrojack, Forget The World, dat in mei 2014 verschijnt.
In 2017 verschijnt het vijfde album van de band met Walk On Water als eerste single.
