Turtle Power! is afkomstig van de soundtrack van de film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles uit 1990. Het was de eerste speelfilm gebaseerd op de stripreeks Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, die eerder in 1987 al had geleid tot een succesvolle tekenfilmserie. Het verhaal gaat over vier jonge tot mensachtige wezens gemuteerde schildpadden die met hun ninjakunsten de misdaad bestrijden, onder leiding van de eveneens gemuteerde rat Splinter. Hierbij moeten ze het opnemen tegen hun aartsvijand Shredder. Het nummer Turtle Power! is te horen tijdens de aftiteling van de film.

Platenmaatschappij EMI benaderde het beginnende Amerikaanse hiphopduo Partners In Kryme om een nummer voor de soundtrack van Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles te schrijven. Turtle Power! verscheen uiteindelijk op single en bereikte in Engeland zelfs de eerste plaats van de hitlijst. Het duo zei in een interview dat het erg blij was met hun grote hit, maar dat ze zeker niet als novelty-act gezien wilden worden. Na Turtle Power! wist Partners In Kryme echter geen potten meer te breken. Er verscheen nog wel een opvolger, getiteld Undercover, en het duo schreef nam een bewerking op van Donna Summers Love To Love You voor de soundtrack van de geflopte Vanilla Ice-film Cool As Ice, maar tot een volledig album van Partners In Kryme is het nooit gekomen.

Van Turtle Power! is ook een videoclip verschenen. In de clip zijn fragmenten uit de film te zien. Deze worden afgewisseld met beelden van een rappende en dansende MC Golden Voice. Voor de videoclip werden speciale opnames gemaakt, waarin naast MC Golden Voice ook de Turtles Leonardo en Michaelangelo figureren. In de clip krijgen zij medailles uitgereikt door een hoogwaardigheidsbekleder. In deze scène is Keymaster Snow (de andere helft van Partners In Kryme) te zien als keytarist.

Wist je dat? In het laatste couplet rapt MC Golden Voice: "Raphael, he's the leader of the group". Dit is niet juist. Leonardo wordt over het algemeen gezien als de leider van de Ninja Turtles. Dit heeft in de reeks overigens wel tot spanning geleid met de wat agressievere en koppige Raphael, die ook graag de leider zou willen zijn.

Rond 1990 was de popularariteit van de Ninja Turtles op een hoogtepunt. In Amerika waren ze zelfs zo populair dat er ein 1990 een concerttour van de Ninja Turtles werd georganiseerd: The Coming Out Of Their Shells Tour. Van deze tour verschenen ook een muziekcassette, een video en zelfs een making of-video. De muzikale stijl van de zingende Ninja Turtles lag het dichtst bij hair metal, maar de teksten waren uiteraard gericht op jonge kinderen. Tijdens de concerttour traden acteurs op in pakken die leken op de pakken uit de film.
